Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity

Welcome to our second Project of the year!

Last Monday 12 October was a national holiday in Argentina. We celebrated the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity. Formerly, this holiday was named ‘Día de la Raza’ (Day of the Race’) commemorating the first encounters of Europe and Native Americans. It is a celebration of the diversity among native Americans and Europeans. It commemorates the date when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas. While the first voyage in 1492 was immensely significant, Columbus did not actually reach the American mainland until his 3rd voyage in 1498. Instead, while trying to find a sea route to India, he made landfall on an island in the Bahamas that he named San Salvador. He was also not the earliest European explorer to reach the Americas.
The day was first celebrated in Argentina in 1917. In 2010 the name of this holiday was changed to promote Indigenous peoples' historical reflection and intercultural dialogue.

As every year, our school organized the Week of Respect for Cultural Diversity, in which all the classes do research about a country. My 6th year students displayed their creativity to show what they learnt about France.

Here’s a photo of me taken by them as part of their exhibition.
Now it's time for you, dear students, to share your thoughts: What did you do for the exhibition? What did you enjoy the most? Did you take an interesting photo? What does it show?

Aylén, Micaela and Agustín

We made the Cathedral of Notre Dame out of cardboard, using tape and paint. We placed it at the back of the room, in front of the Eiffel Tower. We really enjoyed doing this kind of work instead of normal classes because we could talk and listen to music.

Ramiro

I painted a mural about a Parisian café with Francisco and Juani and the day of the exhibition I was dressed as a French man from 1789.

Bautista, Lucas and Tomás

Lucas represented a French football player because besides it's not the national sport. France shows that it has a good National team and also worldwide known football teams, for example, Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
On the other hand, Tomás and myself were the guides of the exhibition. We were the ones that had to learn the main characteristics of France and its main important monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Art Museum, and share this information with the judges of the event.

What we enjoyed the most from the exhibition were the dances interpreted (we agree that Japan had the best performance in it), and also we really like to learn new stuff and curiosities from other nations.
Also, as a guide, I did learn a lot of new stuff I didn't know about France. For example, the Arch of Triumph was built in honour of a victory of the well-known emperor Napoleon I.

The photo shows us in our exhibition. Lucas was dressed as a French football player, and Tomás and I were both dressed 'elegant' because were the guides. You can see, in the background, a paint made by some of our best classmates in terms of painting. This paint included three well-known paints from the Paris landscapes made by the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Carola and Belén

We made Lock's Bridge, the Moulin Rouge and we helped the second year's children.
What we enjoyed the most was the other countries' food.
Our photo shows the boulangerie and the Eiffel Tower.

Marianela and Francisco

Ramiro, Juani and I, Francisco, made a big paint about Paris, we painted a little restaurant next to Sein River at night.
Also, I danced the Carmagnole, a traditional French dance, Marianela danced too, we danced with Victoria, Ramiro, Agustín and Candela. Marianela also dressed up as Marie Antoinette.
